North Captiva Island and Captiva were originally a single island but were separated by a hurricane in the 1920s. Recognizing that the island offered the chance to preserve a landscape that was quickly being eradicated by development, the State of Florida acquired the lower half in the 1970s. This has kept our little slice of paradise from becoming over-developed. Resident Islanders treasure and protect its unspoiled beauty and abundance of wildlife and greenery. Accessible only by boat and free of car traffic, North Captiva offers residents and visitors a unique chance to live in complete harmony with nature. People come to North Captiva to unplug, unwind, and enjoy the leisurely pace and laid back attitude of island life. Our house is designed to be a luxurious, comforting home base for your time on the island. We feel sure that if you decide to spend time at Wish Upon a Starfish, you will find yourself wishing you never had to leave!
From Fort Myers SW Regional Airport, it takes about an hour to get to Pine Island where water taxi service is located.
When you leave the traffic, crowds, and noise behind and enter our island sanctuary, be prepared to slow down and enjoy life at island pace. The atmosphere on the island is friendly, relaxed, and casual.
Our pristine beach is owned by the Safety Harbor Club so use is limited to residents and their guests. You will enjoy the serenity and privacy of a private beach. In addition to white sands and warm waters, our beaches offer some of the best shelling and fishing in Florida.
Our island paradise is full of wildlife such as manatees, river otters, racoons, opossums, and gopher tortoises. Bird watchers will revel in the variety of species on North Captiva. Species living on or around the island include egrets, herons, pelicans, hawks, anhingas, moorhens, comorants, and white pPelicans.
The waters around the North Captiva are home to snook, tarpon, red fish, grouper, snapper, flounder and sea trout. Most of these can be caught by fishing from the beach. Or you can charter a boat and go deep sea fishing. Our island is known for offering some of the best fishing in the state.
North Captiva Island offers three restaurants, Barnacle Phil's, the Mango Island Cafe, and the Over the Waterfront restaurant at the Safety Harbor Club. Captiva and Sanibel offer many more dining options just a short boat ride away.
If you want to add more variety to your trip, Captiva and Sanibel Islands are just a short boat ride away. Many visitors also include day trips to the many activities and attractions of Fort Myers.
Your options for water activities abound, kayaks, paddle boards, and jet skis are available for rent on the island. Boat rentals are also available as are private charters and other boat tours.
